Conférence Britta SCHNEIDER - Europe, its Linguistic and Cultural Landscapes
"In this session, I want to disentangle the interrelationships between ideas about language and conceptions of landscape. To this end, I introduce the debates on language and space as they are found in contemporary sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, where both cultural space and linguistic entities – that is, what is commonly understood as languages – are understood as cultural constructs.
I then illustrate European, nationalist concepts of the relationship of language, culture and space with discursive constructions of language as found in a postcolonial, Caribbean setting. This serves to deconstruct the often naturalized imaginations of monolingual cultural spaces that pervade European ideas about political landscapes.
We will use the illustrations to jointly discuss the role of language and territorial belonging in contemporary transnational and digital spaces of interaction."

Britta Schneider : Elle est anthropologue linguiste et sociolinguiste. Elle a obtenu un doctorat binational de la Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main, en Allemagne, et de la Macquarie University Sydney, en Australie, en 2012. Ensuite, elle a mené un projet financé par des tiers sur les idéologies linguistiques au Belize à la Freie Universität Berlin et, depuis 2018, elle est professeur d'utilisation des langues et de migration à Europa-Universität Viadrina, Francfort (Oder), Allemagne. Ses intérêts généraux de recherche sont la sociolinguistique de la mondialisation, la construction discursive des langues et la recherche sur les idéologies linguistiques, en particulier dans des contextes transnationaux, non ethniquement constitués et en relation avec les environnements numériques.
